Choose Love Display font

Have you ever watched Ted Lasso? It's funny, during lockdown, my girlfriend started binging it because her mates said it was absolutely brilliant. Honestly, I thought, 'What's all the fuss about?' I mean, it's just a show about football, right?

So, I gave it a shot.

First couple of episodes, I was like, 'Eh, it's alright, I guess.' But then, something strange happened. By the third episode, I found myself totally hooked. I couldn't believe it! I guess it's one of those shows that sneaks up on you when you least expect it.

A football show about love

I loved the way the program wasn't really about football. It was about people, relationships and love. If you've not seen the show, I can't recommend it enough.

Now, the character Roy Kent, he's quite something, isn't he? The way he carries himself and the words that come out of his mouth, they got me thinking. They inspired me to create something new, something with a bit of an edge. And that's how my latest typeface, Choose Love, came to be.

Choose Love Font

I set out to design a typeface that could capture the essence of his character—if that is even possible? I wanted it to be like a diamond in the rough, you know? Something with an edge, a touch of fierceness, just like Roy Kent himself.

Plus, there was something intriguing about channeling the bottled-up aggression that footballers often have. On the field, it's all about letting their feet do the talking, but off the pitch, they grapple with emotions and everyday issues, just like the rest of us.

A Handmade Font

That's when the idea struck me – what if I made each glyph using an ink brayer? I took inspiration from my font beautiful freak and loosely based the shapes from it. The way the ink brayer rolled onto paper left behind this amazing texture that I couldn't resist incorporating into the typeface.

So, that's what I did. I got large bits of A3 paper and rolled out the shapes of the letterforms using the brayer.

I had hundreds of papers hanging up in my studio drying. I even had to construct a washing line to make room for them all.

It took another week to scan in and clean up those scraps of paper. With the help of Fontself, I converted it to a typeface.

Choose Love Font Name

I wanted to call the font Ted or Ted Lasso, but that would never get past the lawyers. So then I thought, call it Roy Kent, but that means nothing to your average joe, and might put some people off.

Then it was called diamond dogs, and I kept this for a while. I decided it was too long for my preview screens.

Finally, I struck upon the name Choose Love. It was nice and short, punchy and summed up what the Ted Lasso show was about.

So just like Ted Lasso, Choose Love font isn't everybody's cup of tea.
